What Coolers are you running?
#22
I’m running an Engel MT35F-U1 in my D5 and I’m very pleased with it.
it replaced a small Halfords (UK equivalent of AutoZone I suppose) 12v cooler that I have had for 15 years and which still works but is a bit small at times and it doesn’t cope with the 35-40 degC summers for anything more than keeping drinks cool vs storing meat etc in. Essentially coolers only drop the interior temp about 15-20degC vs ambient as opposed to maintaining an exact temp. The cooler was fine even for meat up to about 20degC cabin in an air conditioned car but parked up in the summer heat it just couldn’t cope of course.
The Engel has no problem but proper compressor based fridges like it are a lot of money vs coolers. That said if you buy something with a reputation for reliability it should last a couple of decades. That’s why I went with Engel, the compressor design which had a reputation both for reliability and low power consumption.
I will add that I did have a Yeti passive cooler that I filled with ice and it would take 3 days for nearly all of it to turn to water as long as I didn’t open the lid and again, the outside temp never went above 21degC or so. But in real world use in a car on a hot summers day the ice would be gone in 24hrs. Finding ice every day (on an Eastern Europe road trip) was anything from inconvenient to next to impossible. Glad to see the back of it.
