Default Purchase advice...

Looking to purchase my first LR and I’m struggling on what the best option is so I figured I’d come to the experts. I’ve googled and searched every forum I can find before posting. I’m looking at a 2014 RR and a 2015 or 2016 RRS. Both have similar miles of between 40-60k miles. Extra room or seating isn’t something I have to have(no kids). I’m really just thinking of which to get in terms of reliability, am I missing out on some cool options if I go with the 2014 RR that are only available in 2015 and up, which rides better, common repairs, stuff like that.

I really appreciate any advice.

Hi Rebelbac,

It might help to know a bit more about what you want to do with the car and what sorts of options you're looking for. I can only share my knowledge and experience. I just bought my "dream car" on Thursday--a 2016 RRS Supercharged Dynamic. I can't sleep I'm so excited about it! Prior to this one, I had a 2015 RRS SE, a 2011 RRS SE, and a 2009 LR2. I may be an anomaly, but I never had a major problem with any of them. Make sure you get the maintenance records and the Carfax report. If you buy certified pre-owned, you basically get the same warranty as a new car (although that may not be true with models that have over 50k on them at the time of purchase). The 2015 was certified pre-owned, but I hated the engine (more on that below). I bought the extended warranty on the 2011 and never used it. I'm still debating about the extended warranty on my new one. I would say avoid the 2014 RRS for sure. That was the first year of the new body style and my understanding is that it has had some issues. Plus, the base models are really base--they have a moon roof that doesn't open. In my personal opinion, the V6 in the 2014-2016 RRS is a joke. The horsepower (and torque) dropped to 3.0L supercharged v6 with 345 hp (my 2011 had a 5.0L v8 with 375 hp). Yes, the newer models are a bit lighter because of the aluminum body, but at higher torque ranges the 2015 left something to be desired (at lower ranges it's actually pretty good). Gas mileage, however, was better. The V8 in the newer models is ridiculous with 510 hp. Driving it is completely different than driving the 2015 with the V6. I like to say it's like driving a very, very powerful cloud. I haven't had it in sport mode yet, but I'm told for a 2+ ton vehicle, its pretty agile. I'd like to get it out on a track just for fun. I've never had the RR (it's really too big for me), so I can't help you there. Sorry for the book--hopefully some of this is helpful!
