Gas pump replacement tips and tricks

i used the vdo parts, the pump assembly is a large multi hosed beast with main pump and another suction device since it is a saddle bag design, and tank is under the rear seats.

advice:
(1) pump all gas out before you begin to remove the pump. i pumped through the passenger rear door and passenger fuel tank hole.
(2) study the pump orientation for both left and right side before removing...helps if you have the new part to look at also.
(3) the tank has indents for the base of the pumps and the spring action locks it in place on the roof of the tank
(4) push down and pull to remove, and to install push down and slide in place..it will lock in
(5) tricky to remove the pump and install through the passenger hole, but main pump goes in first then side pump through same hole and swing side pump to drivers side hole area
(6) be mindful not to break sender levers and orient filters left side to door and right side to rear of vehicle

 

I know this tread is kind of old, but still, I would like to ask if anyone has a "template" of the filter/fuel pump removal tool?,,looks easy to fabricate, once you have the template of the actual "teeth" grabbing the locking ring on top of the pump..

Use a wood piece and hammer...or plastic and gently tap to remove I didn't use any tools
