My 98 RR hatch latch has been acting up. The tailgate closes and latches great, but the top hatch lid does not latch closed. One out of 10 times closing the hatch the latch works. But the other 9 times the hatch just closes but does not latch or lock closed.
I oiled the mechanism inside and outside with penetration oil and I think it helped but it didn't fix the hatch locking.
I tried to find some information on what exactly the unit is called to locate a new latch.

Any one else have this problem?

 

I am having the same issue with my 1998 HSE. Did you ever find a replacement?

 

Atlantic British has them. Expensive. Search EBay and you will probably come across used ones.
