2002 P38 Buy?
I found an couple selling a silver p38 with 200k on it. They bought it from the original owner who lived in the retirement village around here at 90k miles. I can see many new parts and they are high quality, Bosch Alternator, Upgraded radiator, they went to coils when the bags went down while on vacation. Overall looks really good 5 aluminum wheels with brand new tires, it has the little NAV screen. Now for the bad, it hasn’t been started in 2 or 3 years she says so maybe 3-4. I have had several D1’s and D’s and each one has the underside covered with something PS fluid and oil looks like here. They have some of the service records but not all and it has 200k on it. They say it needs a torque converter but that’s self diagnoses. Fine if it does i have an extra. I’m charging their battery overnight and tomorrow I go try to start it (while they aren’t around of course) can get it running so get real firm on the price. So what should I do or don’t do while trying to get it running or before that? What is a round about value inside and outside is plenty nice some armrest issues and the head gaskets I can do I need ronin to on my z04 D2 but with 200k doesn’t that smell like they might have already been done? Thanks for any help I have a couple days to decide I think.
I'de pull the sparkplugs, spray some penatrating oil in all the cylinders, and turn the engine manually with a breaker bar on the crank pulley.
Just cranking an engine that has sat for years is a good way to break a ring(s) that's stuck/gummed to the cylinder(s).
