Default Price range for 1992 P38 Range Rover

I’m looking at buying a 1992 P38 Range Rover from a friend of a friend. It’s in good condition, runs well and wasn’t looking to sell, but is willing.

Can anyone help me with a good price range? I can’t find any for sale so I am having a hard time gauging what it should cost.

thanks a lot!

Thanks for the quick response!

His car doesn't look like a 1992, looks like the 1996 or older... He must be mistaken on the year?

Sorry to bother you so much about this.

So, let's say it is a 1996 P38 Range Rover. It has 132,000 miles from Los Angeles. He drives it 3 times a week around LA and it's running well and in good condition. He was willing to sell it for $10,000, he's friends with my brother and when he was told that I was interested he said he sell it to me for $6,000.

Does that sound fair?

Thanks!

Are you a Land Rover mechanic or do you know one who will give you a discount?

$6000 is probably a fair price for a confirmed solid running truck with no issues, codes, etc. Assuring that status is no easy task... You will want complete service records and a pre purchase inspection from an experienced independent LR specific shop.

These trucks are notorious for being electrically complex and if you ever lose the key fob... you enter a whole new world of screwed. Especially tricky and troublesome are the security system, HVAC, Air suspension, etc. Otherwise engine if Bosch and ABS are same as a D2.

Around here I see them go for $500 to $5000, BAT has seen some pristine ones go for up to $15k at auction. Those are well sorted examples with low miles.

Oh, and it should not be your primary daily driver... I would also budget $2k per year for ongoing maintenance if you don't/can't do most of the work yourself. You may not spend that every year but there will be years you make up in the average.

I'm not a mechanic, but I will look into one a Land Rover specialist near by, and thank you, this does help me quite a bit!

Looking over the system I don't see anything that would cause any different cost than any other SUV, besides the air suspension. What makes you say budget 2k a year??
Thanks

Personal experience makes me say that.

You may not spend the 2k per year but soon enough you will have a 4k year and everything will be in balance.

If you own one, you know... any number of costly things can happen at any given time.
