Default Steering Wheel Tilt 98 P38

Going to try one more time to find a fix... or at least another case of this happening with a positive result... hopefully..

Steering wheel tilt lock stopped working... The external mechanical lever parts seem to all move correctly but the lock will not engage. The wheel just falls onto your knees. Not a good safety feature at all.

I've made a rather ingenious temp fix that keeps the wheel at the top most position only, using some thin threaded rod in place of the springs... but that makes the binnacle difficult to put back in place.

Anyone ever tackled this? My fear is that I'll have to replace the entire upper steering column and of course swap the ignition cylinder parts. Possibly that could be easier than an actual fix. That's what I'm trying to find out.

Thanks!

Oh wow, that sounds strange. I recently had some of the tilt mechanism out of mine to replace the ignition switch. I’m trying to think of what the problem could be. There’s a little plastic rod that goes into the steering column that is actuated by the tilt lever, could it be broken/missing/installed upside down (so the little detent doesn’t do it’s job)? Or maybe the problem is deeper? Please keep us posted.

Thanks!!

I've not dug into it that deeply apparently. The rod does move but nothing locks. That's all I know at this point.
