Default Starting issue

SO my 2010 sport model has a strange starting issue. press start, foot on brake and perfect. But 1 in 3 times this won't happen. It can fail anywhere, at the gas station, or at home, warm engine or cold. It spins over strong as if there were simply no fuel getting there. Persisting if I keep trying eventually it starts perfect. Before having the courage to keep trying I'd wait 15 minutes and then it would start no problem. So while not wishing to remain at the gas pump 15 minutes I persist in trying to start it. With repeated attempts it tries to start there is a kinda click or if you can imagine, a sound like a rotating fan is stuck, and just needs a shove to get going type sound? Then suddenly out the blue it starts perfectly?
One mechanic said its the fuel line feeder and gave it a knock but that has not proven correct. One shop says it needs a software update? they are guessing and I don't want to end up changing parts without knowing which part is actually wrong. A slight addition is sometimes at night my headlights will flickker and the elctrical clicks I hear are continuous for a minute or so until it settles down. Could this be from the same fault? I have a strong battery. I'm hoping it's not the gearbox sensor as that is a real problem to change I'm told and may just as well buy a new gearbox! really? But as it's perfect most the time then I would not think that would be the case. Any ideas please?
