Default Rebuilt Non SAI heads- $450

Just got these back from the machinist. He is a Rover, TVR, MG, Jag specialist that does a lot of race motor work. Very good machinist.

Each head was completely disassembled, all parts checked for wear and tolerances checked. Valves were ground, Valve seats received a 3 angle grind, and the Valve stem seals were replaced.

Interesting facts:

- Intake and exhaust valve seats are ground at different angles, exclusive to the port.

- He uses grinding wheels to ensure the valve grind is centered(Most newer machine shops use a cutting tool which is faster, but also leaves room for the machinist to grind the valve slightly off center)

- Most LR heads he does are straight until he gets to the rear water jacket. That is where the majority are out of tolerance.

- These heads had already been decked once. Head #1 he took 3 Thousandths of an inch off of it, and now it is 7 Thousandths of an inch less than factory new spec. Head #2 he took 4 thousandths of an inch off of and is now 10 Thousandths of an inch less than factory new spec. He explained that these amounts are negligible and a human hair is thicker than 10 thousandth of an inch. He also said that if you measured compression this would not make a bit of difference.

$450 plus shipping.

How can a neway seat cutter cut a valve seat off center? The cutter is mounted to a guide rod that uses the valve guide.

I'm not a machinist, was just passing on what the machinist told me.

Maybe all shops don't use the technique you are referring to?

I did some searching after I posted the question. Both methods are good it all depends on the technique/finesse of the machineist.
