Hi, I am extremely new to the Land Rover world. I figured I would come here to gather as much information and advice as I can regarding a Series II Land Rover I have inherited recently (Major Project).
So, here’s a little background:
My grandfather, whom was my best friend, passed away last year (2024).
✨Backstory✨
My grandfather told me so many stories about this Land Rover and how he saw it sitting in front of a business (Somewhere in Georgia). He told me that he HAD to have it and one day spoke to the owner of the business who then gave Grandpa a price. He then did not hesitate to make sure that he took this 1960 Land Rover home. He had so many plans about how he wanted this to be restored and what all he wanted done.
When I tell you that this man LITERALLY shined when he talked about this truck, he absolutely shined! To many, this looks like a “Hunk of Metal” but to me, this is a priceless treasure.
This truck was my grandfathers obsession. He used to call me every other day to talk about how he loved to look at it through his window. He’d always say “Yeah, I went out there to see what I could turn” and all I could imagine was him trying to turn wrenches with one hand and his oxygen tank in the other.
He tried to apply to a TV show to get them to restore it for him. Had that happened - he’d probably have soooo many copies of whichever episode was his Land Rover.
I would have given anything just for him to ride in it at least once before the good Lord called him home.
If anyone knows ANYTHING about this type of Land Rover, I’ll gladly take any insight and anywhere to start looking for parts - I’d be extremely grateful. I could tell you just about anything you need to know about a Jeep so this is new ground for me and way out of my knowledge.
I do believe he had acquired many parts needed for the restoration and the engine only needs very little TLC to get back running as it ran a year or so before he passed.
I would love to see any pictures of your Series 2 Land Rovers from all angles and corners just to somewhat help me get an idea of things I need to do to get this in tip top shape.
Sorry about your grandfather’s passing. I’m glad you got the LR. These vehicles are very easy to work on, and most parts that you will need are readily available, though probably not locally. Nor are the parts expensive typically. If you know how to work on Jeeps, you’ll have no trouble with the LR.
Congratulations on inheriting your grandfather's Land Rover. The first picture shows it fully assembled with freshly painted wheels. Did you buy it like this and then take it apart, or the reverse?
I recommend buying a book. There are several available on Amazon, including a Haynes manual. As the previous poster said, they're pretty easy to work on and live with.
Good luck, and come back here with your specific questions.
He bought it assembled and slowly began taking it apart to begin the restoration. I’ve recently ordered a few manuals to help give me somewhat of an insight on things that will be needed to get done. I’m excited to start where he left off at!
Myron, very nice looking 2A. You’ve beat me by 2 years. I had my 1963 2A 88” for 27 years. My paint was patina blue (original 1963 paint). I finally needed to part with it 4 years ago. It went to a very good home.

Thank you, Harv! It was a boyhood dream realized when I was in my late 20's. Now I am looking 60 in the face, but the old Rover is still with us. I put it on a new frame and went through it bolt by bolt in 2004-08 I farmed out the engine rebuild to an expert but did everything else myself. We've taken it on a couple long trips, but these days I prefer my 2023 Defender 110 for road trips.
