Cooler installed but not sure if its for transmission or for engine

I would like to install a factory oil cooler for the disco. But i found out that there is one already installed. Im not sure if its a transmission or engine oil cooler installed. Got pictures here.

 

I believe all models had engine oil cooler and 99-02 had the similar separate transmission fluid cooler. If your rover has a single cooler then it is a 03 or 04 engine oil cooler. The transmission fluid coolers have an electrical temp sensor attached to bottom of one end, as I recall.

 

Actually the earlier years had both but the oil cooler was omitted from later models, not sure what year. My 04 does not have one.

If you have only one, it's the trans cooler.

 

That photo Is an 03'/04' trans cooler.

The cool kids take that cooler and use the cooler lines from a 99'-02' and add it as an engine up cooler.

That cooler is the largest cooler Land Rover put in the D2s.

 

Somewhat relevant topic: has anyone found a source for new D2 oil cooler lines? They've been discontinued.

 

I have, but the price is crazy. Like over $300 for one.

 

I have been considering getting an oil cooler and one of the sandwich adapters that go above the oil filter.

 

If the other get installed, it will almost block the radiator air passage. Am I gaining anything here? Seems like the main radiator wont get enough air to cool the coolant. but I'll try it somehow if the pipe is long enough to reach. I still remember the temperature before the HG replacement.

 

I have added the larger trans cooler as a engine oil cooler and there was no change in my coolant temps(04' D2)

 

There are 2 different front covers, oil cooler type and non oil cooler type. I just found this out myself as I'm in the market for a replacement. I originally thought the covers were the same, and the oil cooler port was simply blocked off on 03/04. Hm.
