Default Transmission Oil Temperature

The red light lit up on my. Luckily I was almost home and turned off the car. Any ideas on why? Do I need to bring it in?

Thanks
Sean

What were you doing?

I'd start with the basics like checking for leaks, checking the fluid level, how does the fluid look (red, brown...?), check the condition of the tranny cooler (kind of hard to do). If all that passes, drop the pan, check the filter and replace if needed, clean it out, refill with fresh fluid, and then see where you're at.

Light can come on from overheating or problem with indication system.

As previously said you or somebody else needs to check the fluid level/condition to begin with. If that's good you may want to look at temp sensor or wiring of indication system. Fluid/filter change recommended unless its been regularly serviced.

Transmission fluid from the gearbox is circulated through a cooler attached to the front of the radiator. Quick release
connectors on the transmission fluid lines attach to connections on each end tank of the cooler. A temperature sensor
on the RH end tank provides the instrument pack with an input of transmission fluid temperature. If the temperature
exceeds a preset limit, the instrument pack illuminates the transmission temperature warning lamp. The warning lamp
remains illuminated until the temperature of the fluid returns within limits.

The trans temp sensor in the trans oil cooler in front of the radiator is known to fail.
I had to replace mine when the trans temp light came on 8 years ago since than no problem.

I think that warning light can come on from the t case fluid being to hot as well, but I'm not sure.

I think this is correct, because the transfer box has an oil temp switch, and definitely triggers a light on the dash if too hot. While the owners manual does not say explicitly its the trans oil temp light, there's no other light it could trigger that makes sense. So, check the transfer box oil too

FYI on what may illuminate the light.

abran, thanks for the reference.

The Electrical Library suggests some D2s have two different sensors that may illuminate the light. Wiring diagrams confirms both sensors until the x-box sensor was no longer installed on 03/04.

Transmission oil warning lamp
The transmission oil warning lamp is connected from the instrument pack pin C0230-7 on a
BLG wire to header C0293. BLG wires from header C0293 are connected to the
transmission oil temperature sensors. The sensors are located in the gearbox oil cooler and
the rear of the transfer gearbox
.
If an earth path is completed on pin C0230-7 the instrument pack logic circuit monitors this
as an input and provides power from the ignition supply to illuminate the warning lamp.
Fuel warning lamp
The instrument pack internal logic circuits monitors the resistance value of the fuel gauge
circuit. The warning lamp will be illuminated via an internal supply from the ignition circuit if
the value stored in the instrument pack memory is reached.
....

I drove yesterday and no more temp light on. I might bring it in to check on all the things mentioned. Thanks for the help.
