How many 5 speed discos were made?

I'd say I've parted about a dozen over the years. I also have two R380's in pieces sitting in storage for a customer. He owns four or five (at least 3 XD's) all with R380's.
I'd guess the numbers were somewhere along the lines of 1200 in '94, 1500 in '95, 1200 in '96 and 1000 in '97. I don't believe they did any 5 speeds in '98 or '99.

I'll take one at that price if you find another one.. About to order the rebuild kit and attempt it myself which means I'll probably need a new r380 soon

My buddy picked up a non-running one with a lift and 33s for $500. One fuel pump later it ran great, threw new bearings/seals/brakes on it in the fall and I'm heading over there after work today to rip the carpet out and asses the rust and whatever else it needs before wheeling season.

I seriously doubt there were 14,000 5 speed DI's imported into the US in 1997. I would venture a guess that there might have been 14,000 5 speeds imported overall into the US but I think even that number is high. I remember seeing total imports by year for the DI a number of years ago. Imports of all DI's automatics and 5 speeds were over 20,000 for a few years but automatics outnumbered 5 speeds by over ten to one. The first two years, '94 and '95 saw the largest number, as a percentage of total imports, of 5 speeds brought over but, even then numbers were no where near 14,000/yr.
