Default service engine light

I need help. My daughters 04 freelander died out 2x. Had it towed did full tune up and was fine. Service engine light went of and ran fine for several days NOW the light is back on and the rpm's shot up even when stopped at a light! I have read horror stories on this truck. Any suggestions. 57000 miles

go to a local autoparts store and borrow their code reader. then let us know what codes it's giving you.

The "service engine" soon is a emissions reminder, it is telling you that there is a problem with the emissions system on the truck, either bad O2 sensors or some other emissions device is bad.
It has a BMW engine (assuming you have the I-4 and not the diesel) so any European import shop can work on it for you.

Not sure if your reader picks up the tranmission ECU codes, which can also cause the SES or MIL light to come on.

Also text from the RAVE, in typical dealerspeak:

Malfunction Indicator Lamp (Service Engine Soon)
The MIL illuminates at all times when the ignition is in position II and the engine is not running. If the lamp remains
illuminated or illuminates when the engine is running, a fault has occurred in the engine emission control system or
an emission related automatic gearbox fault has occurred. Stop the vehicle and switch off the ignition for at least 30
seconds. If the lamp illuminates after the engine is restarted, rectification must be sought as soon as possible to avoid
potential engine or gearbox damage and excessive exhaust emissions.

If you get a 1472,71,70 ignore them. If you have a 0171,0174 check for broken pcv hoses. If you get 606,or a code similar to throttle body code then look at getting a new throttlebody connector. it can be purchased at the dealer. there is a bulletin for it.
