I am in the market for a used Land Rover Discovery. I'm looking to spend 8k but I would go up if the right deal came along. I was looking in forum but couldn't find the info that I was looking for. I want to know the pros and cons to the model years. I know that the 2003 model recieved more horsepower and a facelift/lights but thats about it. I own a fj62 88 Toyota LandCruiser. She has 145k miles on it and runs great. Do Discovery's have a good reputation as the 'bulletproof' fj62 has? I am not a big off-roader - more of a casual dirt path guy going camping so the Land Rover would be used for daily driving/camping. I really like the look of the 2003+. If anybody could lead me in the right direction I'd appreciate it.

See Discovery Series I Tech Section and in that section you will find what to look for when buying a Discovery, and comparison between various models. Bulletproof is not a term that is usually found on this forum. But the vehicles do well if properly maintained, and few previous owners have done all they should have. Your Toyota is justing getting broken in, why the urge to change, since you are a casual user?

Thanks for helping. I just recently moved down to Florida and left my fj62 back home for right now. The body is excellent and everything works great but the frame is in rough shape - I've been told that I'd run into many problems very soon but it's been over year as a daily driver and its been great. Anyways not sure if the fj62 is in it for long haul (from what I'm told) so I'm looking for alternatives and have always loved the Disco II. Thanks for your help again.

You can use www.statewidelist.com to search all of craigslist, for a particular vehicle like "Rover", and it will sort the output by cities in your state. Can also spec price ranges.

If it's a ladder type chassis on your FJ, why not just get a new one and replace it, if everything else is good. If you like the FJ you can do that, I would think, for a heck of a lot less that $8k.
