Ok, can I divert the thread a bit? Yeah, I'll admit I may have started it by asking WTF re: the expense. Now I'm just curious about the function. As a 20th Century Curmudgeon, I'm struggling to stay relevant in this changing world. But I try! So, let's dismiss the cost for a minute. Let's say the Digital License Plate is a "free" option. Yeah, sometimes that happens! Would you get it and why? My old school self says why add the tech? But, as you can tell, I'm all about questionable choices for style. If it's "hey, it looks cool" - I'm all in about accepting that response. Are there other reasons? Is there any functional difference?
The digital plates are cool and all for tracking us everywhere at all times but I would think the printed vinyl wrap plates will be far more popular. It's one of those, "why didn't they do this before" things.
Florida is discussing this now and the benefits given are tenuous at best. They might attract some because they look better than a metal plate but I don't see a benefit to being tracked by the DMV. This is why I hate government but that's a different forum.
Well, THERE's a reason. Seeing that it can be changed to "STOLEN" has a benefit. In Texas, a LOT of vehicles are stolen and then rushed to the border, so it may help. Then again, they usually park them in a Walmart, Lowes or other large lot for a few days to ensure they aren't tracked. But, that's one use case of an actual benefit.

Any time I've ever stolen a car, the FIRST thing I do is take the plate off a similar vehicle and replace it with any rando plate I may have laying around. They won't notice for a while so I now have a good plate that I can use on the vehicle I'm going to steal.
I was thinking the same thing. The FIRST thing to do would be to switch plates. Very few people without a vanity plate can tell you what the # is and would notice a plate swap. I imagine it would be very cool if the digital plate was wired into the security system so if it were removed the vehicle wouldn't start! But then again if it were JLR, it would be an epic source for PiviPro Update #32 to brick the vehicle....

Imagine getting chased and tazed again because Pivi wrongly flashes STOLEN.
I always wanted STOLEN as my personalized plate - who would dare drive around with that after stealing it! - I did have ONE TEN on my 93 NAS when I lived in CO.
