Their explanation that “a 10 amp fuse was removed and replaced with two 10 amp fuses” is not exactly accurate, as they phrased it. The original fuse was still protecting the source, as it was all along. The fuse tap was merely ‘borrowing’ power from that supply to power the grill light. The grill light, being LED, most likely has such an insignificant power draw so as not to interfere with whatever component the original F7 fuse was protecting. These fuse taps are utilized all the time and should have no bearing on your related problem. Second, I’m sure this is not the first LED grill light that Hunter Prestige has sold, or has been installed in their market saturation. Otherwise this problem would have cropped up in each and every previous installation and we would have heard of this as a recurring problem with their product. Not knowing who did your aftermarket work, is it possible that they used a fuse other than the F7 fuse as specified by Hunter Prestige? If everything was done exactly as it was done in the video, then it would lead me to believe that the dealership executed some software fix/update and is using the ‘aftermarket’ work as being the root cause. And they love to pin the aftermarket work on the owner, thereby releasing them from doing it under warranty and placing the cost on you, the owner. Most warranties cite any aftermarket work as absolving them from responsibility for future problems. Even changing tire or wheel size from the original build gives them the excuse they need to blame engine or transmission problems as being caused by inordinate stress on the drivetrain by going outside of OEM specs. Just my hunch.
Thank-you for the thorough analysis and explanation. I don’t know nearly as much as you do, but agree with your assessment that they’re trying to past the cost onto me. I’m still waiting to hear back from Hunter’s for a more detailed rebuttal, but their initial response was that the dealership could’ve placed the blame on their rear bumper cover as that would be just as ludicrous.

I’m going to wait to hear from Hunters. My overall plan is to drive the car for a while to see if the errors are gone. If they are, then I’ll have the light hooked back up because I don’t feel like that caused the issue. 60+ days went by without any issues, then a software update occurred and I started having problems.

Thanks again for taking the time. I appreciate it more than you know. Have a good one.

Have the same grill on the truck for 5k miles and no issues whatsoever.

They are always so quick to blame aftermarket parts for issues. It is unfortunate that you were given such a vague description for an intermittent problem. I would agree that your path forward for testing this theory is a good one. This path probably should have been offered to you by the dealership and not just assumed is the fix. Confirm that the issue goes away and then reinstall to verify it returns. I would be curious how they handle it when the problem returns. I would agree that this is highly unlikely to be the origin of the problem, but it is not the craziest thing i have seen. So many of the dealerships have this unfavorable bedside manner. Strange how quickly they pivot from warranty and shock you with a bill after they perform the work. Technically, you never approved the work, so it is risky for them to charge for it. Sort of like bringing your car to a shop and they spend a bunch of time diagnosing a problem , but never get approval for the diagnostic time.

But yes, technically if the light is the culprit, you would be on the hook to approve the repairs that are estimated, not pay for a bunch of work that you never approved.

If i had sold you a product and it was the verified problem, I would first ask what can i do to help. I would want it back to confirm and test. And hopefully find a reasonable path forward. It will be interesting to see how Hunters respond. Hopefully it is not just a canned reply like "we have sold and installed hundreds of these and have never had and issue" . How a situation is handled when there is a customer concern is always more important than the fact that there is a concern. Similar to the notion that "aftermarket anything is always a problem" or " you will void your warranty if.. " We find that most people are good and reasonable if treated with respect. Not just deny and dismiss their concern or give false information to scare owners from having some fun with their vehicles. Good luck with this situation. Hopefully it is just something simple like fuse tapping vs something more invasive.

Default Driver assist feature not available/ no 4wd

Hello I saw this thread as this error popped up on my 90. I saw that someone had installed the hunters LED light grill and LRJ was charging someone because it was an aftermarket part. After I read this post I realised oh my light bar is not working??? So I checked the fuse…. Both fuses blown disconnected the light bar replaced with just the 1 fuse and no error on the dash! Not sure what has caused the fuses to blow but clearly this is an issue and bonus as I’ve just saved myself from going to dealer! The light bar had only done 1k miles since installed so maybe just luck of the draw.

I will contact Hunters and see if they have had this issue before. I do hope I won’t have to replace the whole light bar because it was a pain in the **** to do it!

I’ll update you when I have the outcome
