25% Tariff?
Your dealer is correct. I meant to say the invoice date of when the vehicle left the factory and got put on a ship. JLR USA would more than likely be the party invoiced. Did you ask your dealer if your Defender would be subject to the new tariffs? I guess the dealer will not know until they receive the invoice. Please let us know what happens as I am sure there are many more folks who are in the same situation.
I am gonna say not likely to change this time.

JLR isn't going anywhere. North America is their largest market, overtaking China last year. In 2024 JLR sold just over 116k units in North America, followed by China at 91k units, the UK at 83k units, Europe at 72k units, and the rest of the word was 70k units. Compared to the big German three, JLR's sales are quite a bit lower. They don't have the capital or the means to build a factory here, and they never have considered building one anyways. Regardless, they aren't going anywhere and they will not pull out of the US market. It’s their most important market.
and if this really happens, I’m sure JLR corporate will adjust their price margins or ask UK gov to step in for support.
I agree with you as well. Especially Range Rover being favorite car for rich business owners (they can write off 100% in tax due to its weight), they will continue to buy every 1-3 years.

I hope you are right. I personally would not count on that, but we will see what evolves in the next six months...
The funny or tragic side of these tariffs is that the public and our legislators on both sides never ask what caused the erosion of our manufacturing base in the US. All these US corporations that have closed US plants and moved them out of the US did so because they wanted to make their products cheaper and have more profits. There is nothing wrong with that in this global economy in order to stay competitive. All these US corporations could have kept their plants in the US but opted not to. Threatening our trading partners with tariffs whilst not a single legislator is threatening these US corporations to bring back manufacturing back to the US is what happens when our politicians on both sides are bought by corporate America and their lobbying groups.
I am all for strengthening our manufacturing base in the US as it is crucial for our national security. The reality is that the US is still a very large and important market in the world. BMW, Mercedes, Nissan, VW, Honda, Toyota and many other companies did set up shop in the US long time ago because they see a value in doing so. These foreign companies employ thousands of US workers. Our US corporations have become too greedy, and lost sight of the social responsibility they have towards their US workers and their communities.

It would make sense that the tariff would be applied to those vehicles that are invoiced after April. Since yours was more than likely invoiced prior to that date and is in transit, the new tariff should not be applied. But then again, in this crazy whirlwind, who knows? I doubt the customs agents have received any clarity on this; there are thousands of ships heading to the USA with tons of merchandise that were invoiced prior to April 2025. I would personally ask your dealer about this since they are the ones who will get the invoice from JLR. Good luck and let us know what you find out.

Thanks. I agree. Who knows. My vehicle is at Brunswick joined by two other ships. That's 18,000 vehicles? And they all get rolled off to this port? I can't find anything that leads me to believe partial loads for CO will sail to CA. And it wouldn't make sense they wouldn't just take the train from GA to either CA or CO (not that whatever makes sense means anything). No rush for me once through customs. If western state vehicles were destined for Panama, I believe they have a taken more direct southern route. It's just interesting I was given this ship name and told it would arrive at Port Hueneme, CA on the 12th but instead arrives at Brunswick.
Manufacturers have to be attempting to get as many vehicles through customs as possible as their margins will certainly be impacted to some extent. It says Brunswick operates 24/7 to unload cargo and moves on average 1,700 vehicles per day. Of the three vessels currently moored, one arrived from Baltimore a bit later, another has an ETA to arrive in Jacksonville tomorrow (18 hours), leaving a better chance my ship is unloaded next (although it looks like Baltimore is unloading now). It's interesting looking at all the routes/arrivals and departures from the various ports.
Dealer is great, but as of Thursday when he reached out, they're waiting on guidance from JLR and said he's receiving tons of emails, texts and calls. I'll simply watch the port and wait to hear anything. As I said, I'm in no rush, but we did a great custom order and it would be nice to receive that build. Not the end of the world if I don't claim the car. Keeping a new volvo and bmw both still under warranty so not like we'd be without something, we just wanted LR again to take offroad and still be a great commuter missing our LR4s and Discovery.
