Just replaced the original rear pads on my 2020 110 X P400 (just a tick over 31K miles) following this to a T. Thanks @GavinC
350mm rear fluted brake discs, the calipers, rear discs and rear pads, are the same as Gavin’s - but with the “L’Orange” calipers.
Genuine Pads - $200 from Land Leaping. Just like what Gavin got.
I didn’t use brake parts cleaner because I’ve had that ruin painted calipers before. Instead, I used Simple Green Motorsports cleaner (safe for paint, aluminum, plastic - brilliant stuff really I use it for everything)
Did not replace rotors as no “lip” on them. I see no issue, and more importantly, feel no issue.
Used Gaptool for service mode and out of parking brake service mode. A few pushes on the brake pedal afterwards to firm up the pedal, then put it out of service mode.
I really could not figure out how to unhook the electrical connector on the parking brake actuator because it was caked solid with mud and the button wouldn’t depress so I left it on as I have a history of breaking every electrical connector I even glance at. It was fine. I just set the caliper aside. Really no issue at all.
Car throws all sorts of “Take to service center / brake error” after you put it in service mode btw.
Also I did one side, then moved the car around (very tight driveway with walls on either side), then the other, was no issue at all.
Turns out I had more pad material left than I thought I did, but as pad material gets thin I guess it gets dodgy. So it’s more than just “wearing it down to the backing plate”. Land Rover dealership told me awhile ago at 26,000 miles that my “rear brakes were almost done” . They basically told me then (a year ago) it was even unsafe to drive home. Humph. Not at all. There was still a ton of good material on my pads, not even close to unsafe.
I didn’t replace the wear sensors. And at least on mine with my mileage and on a 5 year, 1 month old vehicle -- there was no brittleness on the wear sensor. I’ve seen that before, but it didnt’ crack or whatever. Just pulled it straight out - I think people who lever them out with a screwdriver are asking for that bakelite type material to crumble btw. So don’t do that. just a hand pull.
Rented the tool Gavin recommended pictured above from Autozone to push the brake cylinder back in its place. Note: they take an $80 deposit on your card, and give it back fully when you return in 30 days, so it’s a free rental for the DIY’er.
Just did my rear brakes, thanks for this post as I utilized it for direction a few times. Very simple and straight forward. Took 30 minutes the first side as I was learning about it, and the other side took about 10 minutes once I knew what to do. I only replaced the pads. Honestly the hardest part was finding the brake reservoir cap lol
I went with Lucky 8 OEM Brembo pads for my 2021 P300, they were $188 shipped. They were out of stock so took about a week to ship, then got here in a few days (cross country)
Extremely grateful for car forums like this that provides photos and solid direction for DIY's.
At 92.6k miles, this was the first time the pads have been changed - I figure thats because most my driving has been highway cross country trips from Florida to California and all around long road trips. Front pads still have life in them.
Best place to purchase? Finding slight variety in pricing. 39k mi on my '22 110, rear pads ~3mm. Dealer quoted $1.5k to change them. I've done my own brakes on several previous BMW 3 series and MB GLS so figured the Defender will be just as easy. Local parts dept is around $220 (LR162042), Lucky 8 has Brembo $190, & FCP lists 2 different ones for $90 and then $160. How do you know which is which?

I went with the Lucky 8 brembo, after going back and forth via email with them, those are the ones they suggested. when I bought them think it looks like 10 days for them to get back in stock. that was in Jan of this year.
Part Number Part Name Price Quantity Total LR084071 Wear Indicator $47.09 1 $47.09 LR162048 Brake Pads $147.72 1 $147.72 Subtotal: $194.81 Estimated Shipping to 77316 via Standard Shipping: $28.37 Total: $223.18
Purchased my rear pads from my local dealer, $217, about standard pricing for these. No need to replace wear indicators if they have not ‘indicated’ the need for pad replacement, meaning they have not been worn down to trigger the message. They can be reused until that point.
My Rear Pads (P400 110 X, fluted brake calipers) were shockingly cheap from Land Leaping, which is Land Rover Portland.
Also I ordered the wrong ones because - it’s impossible to figure this out. It’s not like I don’t know my way around a parts catalogue either... it’s literally wrong and confusing in JLR’s systems that we, consumers can see. They caught it based on VIN, swapped it, and refunded money because - shockingly - the correct ones were cheaper! See below. They are the best.
Did the rear pads (only) with 30K or so on mine, all in cost under $200. Dealer quote was $1800 (from this same dealership..) including rotors, which were not at all required. There’s little wear on the rotors.

yeah I feel ya, I have resorted to including my VIN every time I order, so they can cross check compatibility with my selection to save me the headache of ordering the wrong parts.
