Default Keeping Rear Gate Open w/o lights/power coming on?

Hi all,

Hoping I’m posting this in the correct please. Call me out if not...I purchased my first Land Rover ever and I’m not sure if this is common or not.

I’m starting to build my Defender up to do over landing. Have the rooftop tent, rack, and am currently building my own custom drawer system to sit in back. It’ll contain pullout boards to hold camp kitchen/cutting tray etc.

Problem I’m encountering... to use this system I’ll have to leave the rear hatch open. In doing so, the vehicle tries to power up lights (that I can’t turn off), the pivot system, etc. and I don’t want to drain the battery. It’s clearly not as simple as my 4Runner TRD where I can just switch the light off and take the key out of the ignition.

Thoughts?

Touch and hold the center courtesy light on the front overhead console for about 5 seconds, until the light quickly flashes off/on. Interior lights will no longer turn on automatically when you open any door / rear hatch (I think Land Rover used to call this feature "hunting mode", as in hunters not wanting to scare off wildlife at night or early in the morning with bright lights when opening doors of their Land Rovers...) Repeat the same to turn the default automatic mode back on. Regardless, after leaving a door open for a while, the car assumes you forgot to close it and turns off the interior lights and touchscreen by itself to prevent the battery from discharging.

So glad they carried this feature over from the LR4. Nice to leave the rear hatch open when on the beach.
