Unfortunately, even a louder horn will probably not be enough. We are living in a world of ignorant, self-centered people who care only about themselves and really don’t give a rat’s *** about the world around them. As you sit at a traffic light, one can observe all the drivers around them immediately press their phone to their faces for a multitude of incredibly important reasons, perhaps a world changing Tik-Tok video, or to inform their friends of what they intend to eat for lunch that day. You know, things that absolutely CANNOT wait. A cell phone is a great tool, or implement for most, but also one of the worst time-sapping, brain cell dissolving toys ever invented. My opinion only, of course, as I’m sure many will strive to disagree.
So do agree, though I see it more dramatically (actually, insert 'your word' here) when driving.
People not signaling lane changes; people pulling out in front of me so I have to alter speed/direction; people running actual red lights, not yellow; on and on. I drive a 5.5K pound truck...how can they not see me?
Maybe these people are truly enabled and I should get off their road so they can live their best life.
Years ago Car and Driver said if we got rid of speed limits people would drive more safely, not exceeding the speed they felt comfortable with. At the time I thought this was a good idea. Seem as if many folk think this has been legally sanctioned, but without the safety aspect.
C&D also advocated a driving intelligence test as part of the driving test. This would restrict the speed and roads people would be allowed to drive on. We would be issued a sticker to be placed on the vehicle. Those with the highest rating would have fewer restrictions on how they could use their vehicle.
Many people today would be allowed to drive only in their driveways.
Horn - I’ve heard 3 different horns so far. Mickey Mouse tweet when double-locking; rapid burst of 3 semi-loud when some lady parallel-parking in front of me stopped 2 inches from my bumper nearly hitting me (my engine was on, in park, surprised me and she even came around to apologize), and then an ok horn when I hit it at IDiots. I may have to mount an old 12-volt horn I took off my boat when I upgraded to twin train air horns given its gathering dust in my shop. 😳
We installed a Viper alarm on my DW’s Hummer H2 after the PD recovered it from a theft. Thieving B-Tard disabled OnStar in seconds. Horribly obnoxious noise when locking/unlocking. Oh well, I get annoyed about other stuff. Mostly, people…..
Alarm - mine has volumetric sensors in exactly the same place as my Ford Kings Ranch. And they were proven functional 1st time I left the pup in the car and double-tapped the fob. Dog was so not happy…..
Just curious, has anyone got a wiring diagram or can help me find one to figure out how the alarm chirp triggers the horn? I'm trying to see if there is some way to intercept that signal and route it to a different 'siren' for a different sound.
Well. I've had some time to play around and access to the JLR Service Manual info for a week... so I found a few things that have at least narrowed down my search.
For one thing, I know its not sounding the horns to the car. There is something called the "Passive Sounder" and it is either separate from or attached to a "Sounder Backup Battery." It looks like this...
And its located somewhere down here:
The only problem is I don't know how to get to it. I can't see it and I only know its vaguely there based on pressing the button while my head is under there to recognize its definitely in that area. I have a feeling the fuse box has to come out to get to it, or maybe it might be possible to get to it from underneath or through the fender liner.
That was more work than I had time for today though.
The good news is, its clearly connected by one lead and one ground. Nothing fancy. So if I could just get to it, I'm confident I could wire up another siren for a different sound. And I know exactly what I want to use (have used in the past).
I have like 4 of these sitting in my garage and I would love to try it out in this application. Just didn't have enough time to hunt for this today.
Hoping that this info will spur you guys to also help me figure it out! I know I can't be the only one that hates the herbie the love bug 'honk honk' every time we lock our cars.
Heres the little bastard right here. How do i get to it though without taking apart half the car...
Rather than get to wherever this thing is … can you get to where the wires come from, snip or tap them, and wire up the chirpy thingy you want to see if works? Might save you some time…

I had that same thought today but I haven't had a chance to see if I can figure out where the wiring comes from.
I did get under the car today though just to pull the fender liner back to see if there was access there. No luck. you pull the fender liner back and look up and its just metal. which makes sense. It tells me that the passive sounder is somewhere between that fuse box and the fender. And I'm thinking the only way to get to it is to pull that fuse box out. At which point is probably farther than I'm willing to go.

That ‘chirp’ sounds goofier than the one in our Defenders. The lock alert in the Defender is just fine in my opinion. I’m personally more annoyed by other vehicles ‘full’ horn sound, especially when a neighbor is in and out of his/her vehicle several times an evening while I’m trying to relax or sleep. And for this thread to go on for nearly two years is surprising given the myriad other issues that are challenging to some. I won’t lose any sleep over the sound of my Defender letting me know it’s locked, IMHO.
