Keyless Entry
I've never seen a keyless entry system implemented so poorly. The feature would fail once in a blue moon in other vehicles for me, perhaps when there was some interference or some "sleep" state in the vehicle. Like others, the fob needs to be out of my pocket and literally next to the button for the feature to work. Locking works no problem. Curious if this can be resolved with an update or if this just is what is. Love my Defender - I can certainly live with this!

Very frustrating - I have a 2020 RR Sport and my door will not unlock even with the fob in my hand. Dealer changed the battery, which I had already done and it still didn't work. They told me to read my manual because it was likely a setting I need to change. Ugh! I had a 2011 and it worked beautifully. I agree, this should NOT be an issue!!!!
My service dept “identified” the issue and ordered a part (new door handle) but still waiting for the part. In the winter, my jacket has an exterior pocket about chest high which I would keep my key. The door unlocked each time. Now that it’s spring, it’ll be in my front pants pocket, so the issue will return. It’s all about proximity, but any decent radio slave key FOB. Should work regardless of where it’s located.
Security.
There's a big increase in thefts where thieves intercept the traffic between key fob and vehicle. You are going to need to touch the handle to open the door anyway so putting a button that triggers a request from the car to the fob is safer than broadcasting a signal from yards / meters away.
Most new cars in Europe have this feature now - even the made in China MG that I had as a rental in the UK last week had this feature.
Also, buy an RFID pouch to put your key fob in when it's in the house otherwise your new Defender is not going to be there one morning. The market for stolen defenders in Africa and Asia has always been red hot

Say it isn't so!! What happened to all the great British brands??? Mini's are made in Germany, Land Rover's in Slovakia, now I'm hearing MG's in China?! Wow, I have not been paying attention. Glad to hear it's still around, I actually thought it went under. My FIRST car was an old 1978 MG Midget. God what I wouldn't give to be back in High School and acted more reckless. You wouldn't be reading from me on-line, but BOY I could have had a lot more fun had I known then. I thought I wasted my youth, I am well confident that I could COMPLETELY waste it now.

It was actually a pretty decent car considering they sell for ~$24,000 (including tax) in the UK. Makes me realize that Chinese cars are where Korean cars were ten years ago. There will always be a market for someone who wants a new car with a seven year warranty rather than a six year old VW for the same price. Compared to the death trap Great Wall pickups I saw for sale in New Zealand and Australia, this was not a bad vehicle.
MG proper went bust in 2005 after private equity clowns fleeced it. Nanjing Automotive bought up the wreckage and then merged with SAIC in 2007.
Driving a crossover the size of an Audi Q3 with a 1 liter 3 cylinder engine and six speed manual transmission is a very different experience to my P300 D110 - on the plus side, though, it did get 50mpg (UK gallons) on the highway

There is now an official fix go to your dealer and have them look into it. These cars were set up as right hand drive and that’s where the proximity sensor is located they will extend the wiring over and add another one to the other side works like magic now. As it should have from the beginning
