This YouTube video does a very good job of describing the differences between a tuning box and an ECU remap.
The tuning box fools some of the engine signals to the ECU by vampiring two ( or a few ) connections in between them. This may increase HP and torque a bit unevenly. The problem is by lying about vehicle telemetry for only fuel sensor and boost sensor ( or some other sensor ) , the ECU is making decisions on only a few of the many inputs it has, this can cause inconsistencies and will cause the ECU to increase boost for instance but not tell other parts of the system and increase timing causing knock if the fuel isn't there. This may not also inform the transmission or other subsystems. The ECU map will not have these issues, because it is the root of fueling an engine, However the stealership can tell if you have a remapped ECU. Historically you could use a tuning system that would read your original map and save it, so you could restore it before service via the OBD2 port or other avenues, this is the way to go. If you want to use a tuner box I suggest only turning it on when that pesky Subaru or Audi or 4 runner is next to you at the stop sign. My defender kicks most other cars butts at stoplights, yes it has turbo lag, but give it about 20 feet. I have had a bunch of chipped or remapped cars, then its up to can the drive train handle it?
