Default Tire upgrade

Very good references in this thread, I thought I’d add some findings.
I researched a great deal about the options to replace the Michelin’s (255/60 20)
I would have preferred keeping the same 32” OD but such an oddball size to find anything all terrain, so to stay under the 32” I had to go 275/55 20- ~ 31.89” OD. I know corgi_express commented about the 265/60 20s having a tight fit, and that the 275/55 have had success. I concur. Haven’t gone too far or tried all conditions or ride heights but the fit is good. They are neatly in the wheel well and their width is perfect. Will be adding the wheel arch guards, but it’s fine without, honestly.
Chose Nitto Terra Grappler 2, so far so good. We did a 80 mile hwy drive. Good response. The Nittos have a reputation of being more quiet than other A/Ts, I’d agree. They’re not as planted as the all-season Michelin’s but had good performance and held the road as expected, nicely. Dry, sunny day so no wet traction to comment on. We ended on a gravel path, also expected characteristics. Firm road character and responsive steering, all hone way around. No rain in the forecast so it will be awhile to assess...

“Protector” ( big fan of Galaxy Quest, and it’s a pun) is a family runabout, barn car, horse trailer rig and my hobby off roader. Took her to the LR owner day in Asheville, on her OE tires and it was ok but felt anything more, pretty muddy day, and she would disappoint, hence the A/T tire search. Wranglers were not high on my list but did consider them.

Installed 275/55/20 BFG Ko2 on factory 20” wheels. Zero rubbing with or without the 30MM wheel spacers installed.

I find it very odd that 265/60r20 (32.5) doesn't fit, but 275/65r20(33.0) does fit? And 265/55r20(32) fits fine. Seems a bit strange and not consistent. There is always variations among tire manufacturers but this seems odd. The wider tire should rub more but seems to fit?

I'm looking at 4cylinder because I want the 18 inch rims. 265/60r18 us a step down at 30.5. BFG KM3s come in 275/65r18 which back to a 32inch tire. Just hoping it isn't too wide.

275/70r18 is slightly over 33 and would be great if they can tucked in. I have run rods on my LR3 for many miles without issues other than tire wear. But I kept my tire to 32 max as i didnt want to be rubbing on bumps tops and stuck offroad.

I'm interested in this discussion as well. I have a P400 with 19" wheels and plan on switching to 18" (with the Lucky8 swap). I do take the defender off-road and want to run as big of a tire as I can without have to run lift rods.

275/55 fits, think you misread on 275/65.

So what's the biggest tire that will fit using the factory 19" rim?? Without lifting...

I had bought 1.5” lift rods, but I’m now leaning towards your set up JesseRohr. Looks great!

Hi all, I've just placed an order for a 2021 with the 18" steels. Keen to find out what would be the biggest size of tyres for off roading you can get on without modifications? Is it still as above 255/70 R18 or 265/60 R 18?

Hi,

It's not that we don't want to help, its that there are almost no off-road tires offered for a 19" wheel.

The math says that a 275/60R19 is 31.99" tall. I can't find a tire like that. A 285/60R19 would be about 32.46" tall. I can't find an off-road tire for that either. A 265/65R19 is 32.56" tall, and no luck with a tire. These would all in theory fit.

If you go to what would be a 33" tire, 255/70R19 would be 33.06" tall. But there is no such off-road tire I can find.

If you have the 19" wheel, you are severely limited to what sizes are available.

Rob
