Default OEM/Factory Cool Box no longer functioning...

Hey all. My Defender came with the console cooler box from the factory (not attempting an aftermarket install).
I admittedly dont use it often, but found when I finally did go to use it this weekend that it wont turn on. I dont recall having an issue with it before, but its been at least a few months since I've checked.
  1. First thing I did was check the fuse...it appears to be fine but I did also change it just to be sure. (Checked for continuity with a multimeter). F21 in the interior fuse box (double checked it was the right one in iGuide)
  2. Yes the vehicle is running/engine on
  3. Double checked not in ECO mode (I was in normal, but also tried it in dynamic etc.)
  4. Nothing has spilled in or around it to think that something could have caused a short.
Anyone have any tips? Did they some how allow you to turn it on and off from the infotainment or something with a recent update? Looked through menus, but not seeing anything new in that regard. Is there a relay somewhere that could have gone bad that I should check?

Under warranty so I'm not worried, but do want to get it working and would like to avoid leaving it at the dealer if I can at least knock out the basic checks.

Anything else I should check before booking into the dealer to have it looked at?

When you press the button to turn it on, do you hear the compressor kick on? If it doesn't kick on when you press the button, it probably needs new start parts (capacitor and relay) but I highly doubt that you can buy the parts individually.

But since you're under warranty, you won't have any issue getting it replaced.

Nope completely dead. I do know the sound of that thing turning on though I've heard it many times in the past.... its not kicking on. Button does literally nothing which is why I didn't think it was impossible that the fuse could have blown some how. Even if it did blow, fuses dont blow for no reason at all... so would have still wanted it looked at maybe at my next svc appointment. I already booked it in on April 24th... so will update when I find out more. Luckily its not a big deal for now.

My family owns a company that makes laboratory-grade freezers & refrigerators. I am very familiar with this problem. I was able to find out that the compressor is made by Secop/Danfoss and it is an automotive-grade variable-speed compressor, meaning when it is turned on, it is always running and doesn't turn off when it gets down to temperature - it just slows down. Compressors do go bad, but like I said, it is more likely that either the start capacitor or start relay went bad, and since these are manufactured for JLR as a compete assembly, I highly doubt you can replace the start parts. Besides, you'd be better off with a whole new assembly anyways.

Sure thing bud, thanks for the insight. Your logic makes sense. I do agree I'd rather it just be replaced. That said, I really hope there isn't some sort of parts shortage right now when I drop off to the dealer on 4/24. Thats the next drama to deal with I'm sure. Luckily like I said I rarely use the fridge so it is what it is. As long as they 'eventually' take care of it.

I had mine replaced under warranty about four months ago. About two (maybe three) for the dealer to receive (they said from California) during which you can use the car, warm drinks of course. It does take a full day for the install. So, I’m all set for summer.

Dropped it off this morning for my appointment. Could have gotten in sooner, but had to wait for an available loaner.

Hoping parts are in stock (somewhere stateside) but won't know till they tear into it today. Will keep everyone updated.

According to my dealer, the new cool box was shipped to the east coast from California. “OEM” most likely from China.

Mine supposedly came from Atlanta. But, there was some sort of label creation error or something. Anyway. They ended up having to resend it. Otherwise I think I would have been taken care of within a couple days. Anyway I got a P300 Defender 110 to drive around for a week. I wasn't too bothered. Just as long as it was taken care of. And it was.
