Are there any alternatives to this solution - really like what they have done but just way out of budget. Im looking for a lockable external compartment for when I am doing outdoor activities (surfing etc.)

I have thought about the same thing, the carbon fibre PLUMB Side Mounted Tool Box is just crazy, super $$$ just as a money flex, look at me...

Powerful UK fitted the plumb units to their Def90, they also said the price was CRAZY and are going to make a ABS alternative in the video below... so keep your eye out on PowerfulUK, I am certainly excited to see a cheaper real world alternative.
