Rear end thump
Have a 2021 Defender with 65k miles. Right after my first major service, I noticed periodically a thump coming from the rear and generally on the passenger side. It only happens at low speeds and generally when I turn to the left. It is more pronounced when I am going up hill and it doesn’t happen regularly. Has anyone else noticed this in their Defender?
Why does it always seem that everything is fine, and the noises and problems seem to occur right after you get it back after service? My Defender has been flawless since I picked it up, except for the time a few months back when I had them replace the A-pillar for the noise issue, (although they only did one side, even though I informed the Service Advisor the noise was on both sides) and I was hearing a noise which turned out to be the engine cover flopping around since the ‘technician’, and I use that term loosely, was not proficient in replacing it and there was a missing rubber grommet and two others mashed out of place leaving it unsecured. I guess it’s hard finding skilled mechanics these days.
Rear differential will have to be replaced. Had mine done at 61k. Full of metal I was told but they would not let me see it. As I had ask to see it so I could take pictures for the group. So we could learn from it.
It is your right to keep the parts they replace unless it was covered under warranty, where the dealer has to keep it in case LR asks for it. I am surprised that they would not at least show it to you. Strange....
It was under warranty so maybe that is why. But I was thinking what now if in another 60k I have the same problem? I was told it was like $7k for it. I don’t want to spend $7k on a new one in 60k miles. I would convert it to an air locking like on Sarek’s new ones. But god know how much he wants for one. Has to be 10k ? But I don’t know for sure.
