I know some manufacturer keys you can shut them down fully by pressing the buttons a certain way/sequence, Mazda being one of them - which is useful for a spare key stored away in a safe for example.

I'm similar with a stack of spare batteries at home, I just set a reminder in my calendar to change the batteries once a year. One might get longer life out of them, but no way they are lasting 4-5 years.

If you push the start button for your engine and you notice it's slow to start up... this happened to me on my LR2. It started fine for maybe a year or two, but after then I noticed it was iffy sounding when I hit start. The dealer looked it over and replaced a chip or panel that controls the engine starting up. Fully resolved after dealer put in a new piece that was controlling the engine start process. Maybe the same for you?
