So the other day I climbed into the trunk to put on a cargo cover. My knee was placed on the flap that moves when the seat goes up and down, to cover the gap. I heard a loud snap and realized that it snapped. Aside from me realizing that I probably need to loose some weight, I also want to replace the part (only cause I just hate broken things). I placed pics below to see if anyone had any experience with replacing such an item or what the part number would be. I tried searching on the web for this part but couldn't find anything since I am not even sure what you call it. Not too thrilled on the design of this thing ... in a way it seems like it was designed to snap, almost like it was pre-scored. Ugh ....
For the particulars, you didn't list all the gory details of your specific model/trim/engine/yada yada - but I think this will work for you. Try the "Gap Hider". This Link should get you close. You'll probably need the "Lunar" color so it should be part # LR163510. What makes it hard to find is that the part number often just shows up as "carpet".
I am in LOVE with the parts search that you can find at JLR Classic: Link. Try it for all your needs. Should get you close.
Now for the shocker (not?) that part is going to cost over $600. Two of my favorite places to look up parts prices show the typical range. OEM Parts Online (Link) is at $570 and JLR Palm Beach (Link) $843. For that kind of income, I would put on my actor persona. The one of an "irate customer" and raise a bloody ruckus with the dealer to put it under warranty. Use everything @nashvegas wrote as your improvised script.
EDIT: Redneck me would have another approach. If it's out of warranty, I would just add a connector plate (example Link) to the under side and call it a day. As long as it is stiffened, it should hold up and be great. Just don't jump on it until that weight loss program is complete! A small plate on the bottom should do it. I don't want to make assumptions on your mechanical prowess (apologies if offended) - so make sure you drill the holes first before screwing it down. Make the holes the size of the solid part of the screw (shank) and not the entire width of the screw. That way it won't crack the plastic and will "bite".
I had no problems with my dealer covering damaged/broken interior trim pieces under warranty. That isn't supposed to break like that, and they should cover it.
Thanks everyone for your input, I will be calling the dealer tomorrow and will get this fixed/replaced under warranty. I'll keep everyone posted as to what they say. If they do push back, then my inner hulk will have to come out lol
@GrouseK9 appreciate the links - I've saved them for future reference. can't believe the parts prices, that's just insane! and your idea on placing a solid metal plate was my initial goto idea. but I'm glad I posted and got the suggestions (and confirmations) for the warranty fix!
UPDATE: So I took my car to the dealer and the technician immediately upon looking at it says, "yup, I've seen this happen a few times before" ... They tried to fix it and after waiting about an hour, the technician came back out and said, he'll have to order the parts for. He then says, "you'll never guess how much that part costs?" so I guessed "$800" (given the info from this forum) and he goes, "nope, its $1,000! for that stupid part" ... even he was shocked at how much that part is ... well now I wait till it comes and then get it replaced. I'm glad you guys told me to take it back.
Mine broke there as well.... the plastic is very weak. I dont think I even manhandled it... just noticed it broken. Anyway. I got it replaced under warranty by the dealer.
