Upgrade tire decision for a 2024 land rover defender
Correct on the load rating. I’m surprised at how many searches returned results with tires running an SL load rating. Our Defenders are fairly heavy to start with, but add passengers, outdoor equipment, off-road gear, towing needs, etc and the gross vehicle weight gets up there. SL rated tires run a maximum PSI of 37 or so. XL load rated tires can be inflated to 50 PSI max, and have more reinforcing material on the sidewalls, making them the obvious choice for me after reading that.
Most difficult time ordering tires I’ve ever experienced. My 2022 Defender 110 X Dynamic SE came with Pirelli Scorpions, XL load rating, with 117T speed rating. At just 17k miles they are shot, tread life is gone, and one has lost chunks of rubber, where I can see the steel belt, and the belt has apparently shifted as there is a wobble in that wheel. After researching numerous brands and ratings, I had settled on the Nitto Terra Grappler G3. When I went to my local tire chain, I was told that they could not install them due to the speed rating, the “T” rated at 118 mph, (top sustained speed). Yet I’ve read posts from others who have installed tires, one being the Bridgestone Dueler A/T Ascent, with a “T” speed rating. So, I either go back to researching tires or just order from Tire Rack and go to the ‘no-name corner’ tire shop and have them installed. Spoke with a support member at Tire Rack and he sees no problem with the Nittos speed rating, but certain shops don’t want to install tires with the ‘T’ rating out of liability issues I suppose. Others owners of tires with ‘T’ speed rating out there, any problems, issues, or admonitions about going with that rating? Trying to decide if I should stick with the Nittos or look for ones with a “U” (124 mph), “H” (130 mph) or “V” (149 mph) rating.

FYI costco is the same with regards to weight ratings (not sure about speed ratings). They won't install anything that isn't the same or higher weight rating from the OEM tire.
I remember mindlessly signing some kind of form acknowledging as such.

Currently have a 2021 110 P400 with 22’s. Car now has 57k miles and I replaced the original Michelin Primacy tires at 28k miles with BF Goodrich Trail Terrain’s in the same 275/45/22 size. Still plenty of tread life left and I really like them. Nice and quiet, minimal handling compromise compared to the Primacy’s and better in inclement weather…..and they look more rugged. Only downside is about 1mpg less.
