I've seen some weird things in my mechanical life, but today was a new high. I was cleaning the nooks and crannies of the area where the windshield is (if you were ever wondering if dust gets there, then yes, a lot of it) as I saw the guy cut into the paint quite deeply as he was cutting off the sealant. Not that I was about to throw a hissy fit but I was a bit upset and even got some air in my lungs to ask him to be more careful - only to witness something that made me speechless and made that cut absolutely irrelevant.
He pulled at the rest of the sealant, and it pulled away... along with the paint, all the way to what I reckon is the primer. That wasn't even close to the cut, the cut had nothing to do with it.
Until today, I've never seen anything like this, and always thought that the only thing you can do with a paint is chip it - but man, peeling it off the primer??? The tech said "this is normal", and apparently he's been doing a lot of LR work, I have no reason not to believe him.
So now I'm thinking - is this indeed the quality of the body paint??? Or is there something to it that I don't know?
I'm very curious to see how this area will look like the next time I get the windshield replaced...
Same thing happened on an old car of mine (a 2009 E93 M3 BMW, guy peeled off the old bead, which btw you are *not supposed to do, you’re supposed to leave it there)
I worry tons about nicks from windshield replacements causing rust. Multiple Discoverys I have had windshield rust from such things -- otherwise, there would be no rust.
