Just looked at Eric's machine shop bill and it looks like he paid $225 for the same thing I'm doing to the heads...so bargain at $195 I don't care what you say IH!!

I asked our local race car engine rebuilding/machine shop guru what he would charge to plane heads, lap valves, replace seals, and he said about $200, so I think you did OK.

As long as you don't go to Bubba's, where they use a belt sander....

lol......(belt sander).

Whoa to the face wash fellas, I know what goes into the mix and I read "valve seals" when I made my comment.

Soooo, besides cleaning and surfacing what *exactly* is being done to the heads (because I've now read guides since that post)? Seats being cut, valves being lapped, hugs being given.....what you say?

Just teasing IH...no face washing here.

I need to get a better idea of what he's doing exactly and report back. Truthfully I don't know about the seats, lapping, etc. Basically I was faced with about $100 to resurface and clean. Or he said he would disassemble, resurface, replace the guides and clean for 195. I may have read more into it than he is actually going to do though now looking back. I need to check on that so thanks for getting the clarification IH. Matt

If they are doing the guides that is right on.....

Who says I don't deserve a face wash every now and then......lol.

Most likely that is seals, not guides.

OK, just got off the phone with my guy. It's just as I described but SavB is correct, 'seals' not guides. No lapping, seats etc.

So maybe a bit high then but this is the 'best' shop in town. They have been there 30+ years and do all the race/hi-perf stuff around here.

In fact, my job is already complete (minus the seals)! Not bad as I just dropped them off yesterday afternoon. Too bad I don't have the gasket kit yet...I'd have it up and running before dinner! ;-) The good news on the heads is that everything looked good on disassembly and inspection. He said it really needed nothing except they were warped pretty badly. Had to take .010 off! I'm thinking I'll have a real race machine now with all my new-found compression!

That's the update for now.

Sounds like you made out and saved a deserving early Discovery from the Scrap Pile.

The composite gasket is like an inch thick.....you'll be back down to around 6.1:1 in the magic bus.

It still has to go together.....at least the valve covers will sleep well now they have a new tool.

So far it's game on to keep it under a four digit number in the expense column......

I will say (on my behalf only) that throughout this TENUOUS journey I've held out hope beyond all hope that all will end well. It sucks to be the only one on the block, can't even buy a friend around here.
