1994 D1 Head Gasket...finally.
The only remaining major expense is going to be the exhaust. I also discovered a brake issue recently while fooling with the exhaust. I need to start a new thread on this but basically the exhaust has been broken and riding on the rear axle for so long it has pinched the brake line to the left rear caliper completely closed! Also rubbed through the wiring going to the same spot (ABS wires I'm assuming). Funny that now that I have most of the electrical working and the 'H' light extinguished the ABS light has also extinguished.
Re reassembly, should I clean up the mating surfaces with something like a scotch-brite pad? Obviously I don't want to use a scraper or something too abrassive.

If you buy the OE exhaust it costs a small fortune. I would take it to a muffler shop and see what they quote you to compare costs. You don't need the resonator unless you want quiet. It's not that bad without it.
The brake line you could order online or cut out the pinched section and replace with a patch section. They have a funky style of flare that isn't in most flare kits. NAPA may have it, the one line you need or the flare.
The ABS wire that's worn through won't effect the operation of the ABS except for that wheel, wouldn't detect lockup. I'm surprised the light went off though, maybe it's still good by a strand?
I used Acetone to clean the deck with. Tough areas had a soak, applied Acetone with a brush and let it work in. I happened to have some decent plastic ware from several MRE's laying around. I put a sharp edge on the knife and used it to whittle the stubborn chunks off and then Acetone soak. Worked like a charm, didn't take long at all. Goo Gone works too. It's allot easier than it looks. Zero scratches is what you want.

little off topic - I was dropping off my child at school, near Hunter Army Airfield (lots of copters), and admiring the Volvo SUV in line ahead of me, probably a soccer mom, and when she got out she was in her flight suit... and why wait until tomorrow to say thanks again for all you've done.
Absolutely going to a local shop for the exhaust. I'm hoping to recycle the muffler and will likely get rid of the resonator. While under there I noticed a pretty significant area of surface rust directly above the muffler. It's obvious there was some shielding here at one time and has been removed. I will clean it up and treat it. Then shoot it with some high-temp paint. I've seen cats that get that hot but not a muffler. Anyway, I will get some more pictures you guys will choke when you see the cobbled-up mess that's on there. There is one bend that is so severe I don't know how anything ever got through it!

It's worn through the insulation though. Should be an easy repair. I just need to find the brake line from the junction box to the wheel. I didn't see it on the BP site. I'm thinking maybe Paul can get me one. I need to talk to him about a PS pump too.

Picking up the heads today. Things are a bit slow here this AM after four inches of snow last night. I'll let everyone else go out and 'clean-up' the track before I venture out.
Also got my nasty old valve covers hot-tanked. I hope they were able to get all the crud off. Probably fouled their machine up for good after that batch went in!
Now it's time to clean, clean and more clean. I did manage to get the piston domes cleaned-up and the block surface. All down hill from here right?

This thread has inspired me to buy a "blown up" Disco off of craigslist. They are dirt cheap. The gasket repair seems extremely easy....for me that is. I dont do tranny work but all else is fair game.
I don't know what you know or not so I'll just give you what I know about LR motors.
Not all LR "blown engines" are just head gaskets. I'm sure you've heard of slipped liners......more common with mid 99 thru 04 but they've also shown up in 96 thru 98's. Slipped liners will present loss of coolant like the head gasket. Cylinder 1,2,7 or 8 might be head gasket or they could be slipped liner. The only way you'll know for sure it's a slipped liner without doing a block pressure test or removing the head and checking the deck to liner surface is the spark plug/piston will be clean in any other cylinder than those four. You can get another liner tossed in but sometimes the bore has cracked.
The other issue is spun rod bearings. Seems to be a regular thing because these motors don't get the servicing they need. I put out feelers for another motor and 2 out of 7 needed crank attention. Let's say the journal is under mins and you need another crank, try and find a reasonably priced crank like you would for a SB 350.....
This isn't to say you can't snag an easy fixer up it's just to let you know the faults that can be hidden. I wouldn't even trust an add that spelled it out until I was sure it was just a hg......

I was at the local recycler gettring a used rear driveshaft from a 98 to replace mine. While waiting at the counter, I was admiring a Volvo XC CrossCountry differential they had on a display stand. That thing looked like it should be in The Museum of Modern Art like the Movado Watch. It was finished with a beautiful paint job, no leaks anywhere, came out of a smashed up Volvo. Wish our Land Rovers were made by Volvo.
No Soccer Moms in sight though.
