From the RAVE.

WARNING: All the airbag system

MUST be renewed after the airbags have
deployed.

I still don't see why the ECU would need to be replaced. I believe that the RAVE states to use Testbook to reset the ECU. Not to replace it.

And I think this is just for safety. They are probably worried about the condition of the parts after an accident. They don't want a damaged wire causing problems later.

Some types of airbag systems have a sensor in the computer, that might be a reason to replace it.

The dealership also notified me that i have about $4000 worth of repairs ie oil leakage, break pads, spark plugs etc. Since its not worth it, i guess it took 15 years for me to finally part ways. RIP Land Rover Discovery 1996 at 30K miles.

It is for safety. They put it in to remove themselves of any and all liability if the equipment fails after 10 years.

Your kidding right? You are going to get rid of it because it requires regular maintenance? You could do the work you listed yourself for about 1/4 of what the dealer told you , maybe even less. The only thing that might be real spendy is the oil leak or it could just be the valve cover gaskets.

i have to replace the timing cover gasket, oil pan gasket, serpentine belt, air filter element, spark plug wires, and the oil cooler line. I just got new brake pads and brake system fluid exchange today for about $280. Anyone know approximately how much everything else will run me?

Dude if you sell this truck after spending $4000 to fix after a accident you are a complete idiot for nor wanting to spend $300 and a weekend's worth of time fixing it.
Brake pads are $100, tune up is another $100.
I am betting the oil leak is from the valve covers, thats a $3 fix.
If you sell this I am going to send some hard hitting pipe wielding mothers to your house to set you straight.
You dont spend $4k just to sell it, if you were going to sell it anyway you never should have fixed it.

I've changed my mind on letting it go. The tune up and other maintenance issues, I can handle. The primary problem is the SRS light. I know i can go without airbags, but wouldn't my car fail an inspection? I read in the RAVE that upon deployment, you have to replace everything from wiring harness, 2 airbag crash sensors under the hood, DCU, etc. No mechanic around me wants to do this work. So what do i do?

A masterful troll, sir, I salute you. It had better be a troll, otherwise the forum as a group will have to band together and start making torches. And it's Sunday, for goodness sakes.
