Default 1996 Discovery engine harness routing

I had a wreck in December 2913. Bought a parts car, but the body shop estimate was too high. I decided to move my recently rebuilt engine to the parts car. Problem the parts car had been in a barn and rats chewed the engine compartment harness. I have the good harness from my wrecked car but need a diagram and some advice on how to remove it and place it in my parts car. I know this will require a lot of work, but I need anyway to remove the dash of the parts car to replace the heater coil, so I will be tearing into the interior. First question" what are the major connection points for the engine compartment harness?

Tap this link with your mouse pointer and you'll be downloading the Service Manual called the "Rave" for many LR models including the Discovery. It's a 590mb download, you'll need Adobe Acrobat Reader to read the files/manual. You'll get most of your questions answered by the manual and what you don't you can then ask the forum. The dash removal is in the manual. Your asking for a ton of information just with the major branches of the loom......good luck Jerry and post as often as you need.

Default Use of the Rave Manual

I have and use the CD-ROM version of Rave. It is less than useful in my application need. I want help in routing the harness bundles through the firewall and elsewhere. What components will I have to remove to create the harness paths. The Rave helps with circuit diagrams but does not deal with the routing of engine harnesses. I could just start pulling things out , but that is not my style. My first choice is a diagram or map of where I will be going. Surely, someone in one of the forums has taken out and installed an engine bay harness. Please stay on my case.

Its fairly straight forward I have done it twice on D1's.
In fact I bought an extra harness when they were available as I thought they were getting to be a job card habit!

Basically its best if you remove the plenum to gain access.

The biggest issue is getting the harness down over the top of the transmission or (pulling the old one out not) only for the upstream/downstream 02's (don't mix up left and right--mark them with tape) but for the transmission controls and t/case etc. Life is much easier if you pull out the shifter and plate arrangement.

Now make sure you have the right harness and that it has post evaps wiring additions (mid 1997 NAS spec onwards) . All so often Landrover does slight changes that are vin specific so once you have old the harness out on the floor check it against the new one.
Nothing worse than installing one to find serious changes or differences exist from old and donor/new. (Been there done that)
Best of luck

Default Good Harness Information

Tuercas Viejos, The information you are providing is what I need. I am familiar with getting the harness free of the engine. Going to the firewall or the major computer links is where we are at. Do we go through the firewall?
Do we have to remove the window washer reservoir? Your experience is what I need to answer these questions. My Discovery is a 1996 D1. I do not understand the "left or right" attachment cautions you have given me. Please stay on my case. Jerry

Jerry Hi
Yes as I recall getting the washer tank away from the bulkhead helps enormously at removal and re-install; in fact its a fact of life on the D1 that a lot of appendages need to be loosened off and moved to get correct siting of the harness.
Yes there are additional wire harness sections passing through the
firewall, the engine service reminder module just being one of them!

The 02 sensor sockets for the upstreams are handed and taped up through the insulation to face left and right so as to not get them mixed up. This is essential for engine control when you finally get it all fixed. The sockets can easy end up hanging down and in the tight space end up being cross connected since their sockets are the same.
