Thank you for all the info! @Robert - I'm in Portland, but may take you up on that offer at some point. Unfortunately, in my immediate future the '98 I was eyeing sold while I've been out of town for the holidays. I'm going to keep looking, though, and this thread has really helped me to decide the pull the trigger much quicker next time.

I’ve decided to sell a few trucks, including my D1 to free up space for my 109 build.
Mine is a 1997 SD, it was the last manual transmission car that was imported into the USA. Drop me a line if you’re interested. I also have a parts car with a whole bunch of nice trim pieces that I was going to fit into my SD.

It’s a (final year) 1983 County Station Wagon that I bought and imported about 3 years ago. There’s not many original trucks left and this one is all original with the exception of a 200tdi. (Although I do have the original 2 1/4)I promised myself that i’d Sit on the truck before I made any changes, i’ve Gone through a few build permutations so i’m glad that I did. For now, my plan of record is to retain the 200tdi , add the short bellhousing r380 + part time lt230, add power steering , then put an Alucab Icarus poptop on it. Originally I started buying D1’s thinking i’d use the axles, transmission and drop in a gems v8 but that idea is now dead and buried
