In my experience you'll drive yourself nuts(and poor) trying to diagnose and fix tiny little tick or knock. Run it till it blows up, then rebuild it.

Yeah I wouldn't worry about it too much. Move on to other areas of the truck, or install some sound insulation. Worse case, it blows up, and you rebuild or replace it.

Thanks guys. your avitar rovers are SWEET.

heres my brief insight to this vehicle:

I need a 4wd vehicle for my wife to drive daily to her job where she may be asked to drive offroad a bit. i said suzuki outback, she said THIS rover. I liked it too.
it haas 60k on it and runs great. except for the knocking.

I need it to run reliably as a daily driver for about a year starting september. I have till september to hand it over to her. Ill do routine maintenance for the year.

THEN, after shes done with her job, I get a 90k land rover to make it look like this one:

not sure my picture posted or not.
anyways, back to the ticking issue. i must try to fix it.

oil pressure at idle: 42psi(startup)
oil pressure at 2k rpm 40psi(startup)
oil pressure warmed up idle w ac on: 22psi-this is when i hear the tapping

with an aluminum yardstick, i zeroed into the tapping. its loudest at the rear of the drivers cylinder head under all the throttle cable area. its loudest when ac is on. when i shut off the ac, tapping does get quieter but still there.

I'll go open it all up at the valves and take some pictures. its not raining today.

Update and question about my 98 disco.

update:
took off drivers rocker shaft. cleaned it on the bench. reinstalled

inspected lifters and cam. looked good. since noise was coming from that area i replaced 2 lifters. rods were straight.

put it all back together. filled fluids. started..........the tap came back again.

so i just finished pining the rear two liners. i used stainless bolts with alot of red loctite. I hope they stay! I put everything back together and i just started it this morning to move it to park it. it started and i moved it about 100ft and i didnt hear any tapping or anything. I didnt let it get up to temp yet however because it says 24hrs for the loctite to cure.

Question:
I broke off the head of the bolt that is at the top of the drivers side motor mount. Its the one thats smaller than the two below it that bolt into the block and it also holds a heat shield on.
I moved on and put the entire engine back together because im limited on time. I just want to see this thing run without the tapping noise.

so my question is:
Can I drive the rover without that top bolt on for a while till next time i can tear things apart?

Ok..the winner is savanna buzz. Looks like pining 2 out of the 8 liners worked! It's all quiet and purrs now! Thank you thank you! There is a slight, super slight tapping after a long drive. Since I'm gonna take off the motor mount to extract the broken motor mount bolt, ill finish pinning the rest of the liners for good measure. The hardest thing about pinning the liners besides removing parts is drilling a hole at the exact right angle to be straight into the liner side. It's tough. There is a margin of error I think though. The same margin of error happens on the flattening of the stainless bolt threads. I had to match the bolt to the hole mis-angle to overcome my slightly off-straight hole.
I would have take pictures, but I was in there pretty deep. Next time maybe

new 180F autozone thermostat installed.

I had a rough day yesterday with the drivers engine mount bracket top bolt to block. I bottomed the bolt out in the threads then twisted the head right off. that bolt half is not budging, its frozen. i broke a few ez-outs in it with no success. So my priority switched from pinning the front two liners to just get the mount back on. I had to tap a new bolt hole right next to the original in the block. I didnt want to drill too deep into a water or oil jacket so i only went in about a half inch or less. then I sacrificed a 5/16 tapp by grinding away the tapps starter threads to get the threads all the way down the hole. Then i made another hole in the bracket and it all worked out, but i didnt have time to pin any more liners.

its all put back together now and curing loctite and oil pan blue rtv.

and im going to figure out how to fill the radiator and bleed it for the first time. I do hear the waterfall from the dash now since i had to take the intake manifold off for inspection. I should be getting an ultraguage in the mail today or tomorrow so Ill really know whats going on with cooling.

Thanks again Savannah Buzz. You should be paid a salary for the work you do here on the forum. Whos in charge here?
