Default D1 starting issue

98 d1, starting issue Good power on the main lug. Starter relay is good, but im only getting 6 volts on the signal wire at the starter. Is there a common issue for this? There is no immobilizer on this car and I know the starter is good.

Not uncommon for the grounding cable to corrode and cause excess resistance. That being said, clamp a jumper cable to the starter and a good ground (even maybe the ground side of the battery) and try it Of course it could be a worn out starter/solenoid too.and yes, they are a pain to replace. Top bolt is tough to get to.

I had the starter off and bench tested, I know im good there. I found a massive voltage drop on the main power cable to the starter and replaced it. All grounds have been cleaned or replaced recently

Maybe check the ignition switch contacts. Dirty or corroded or just worn out can cause low volts. Otherwise it's down to tracing the circuit trying to find damaged wires or connectors. Wiring diagrams and a voltmeter are your friends here.

Turns out the ground strap on the top starter bolt had disintegrated.
