Just a thought, could it be a fuel injector/injectors that are leaking? My son had a Saturn and told me he was leaking gas somewhere because the tank would be down 1/4 every night. He couldn't find a leak though. I had him bring it over and I pulled the dipstick and it smelled like gas. Called a a friend that was a Saturn mechanic and he said the injectors were cracked. Sure enough three out of 4 where bad. Might check to see if you have fuel pressure after it sits a while.

I replaced my gasket when I first got my Disco and it wasn't very exspensive. I don't think you could get it to seal up everywhere with gasket maker.

First things first, check the fuel pressure at the fuel rail right after you shut it off, write that down and leave the fuel pressure gauge hooked up.
In the morning before you do anything open the hood and check the fuel pressure again, it should be within 5-10 psi as the last time you checked.

The RAVE manual says to pull the spark plug to check for consistient coloration. A leaky injector will cause a spark plug to appear "sooted up". The injector are exspensive so this is an easier way to narrow it down.

I just googled "land rover discovery intake manifold gasket and came up with this.

Car Part Wholesale - Auto Parts and Accessories Catalog - Victor Reinz Intake Manifold Gasket

I think I got mine fron the dealer and it was around $80.
