Default 96 discovery Transfer case issues

After several years of debating the purchase of a Discovery, I finally found a one owner (although somewhat neglected) 96 SE. 175,000 miles with a fair amount of service history.

Now I am working through issues. First up.....

CDL selector is in Neutral position but is daily driven. Will not move into any other position besides moving left and right. Sounds to me like some linkage is broken between shifter and T case. Thoughts? Drives fine but would like low range to work.

Thanks for your help.

It's not in the neutral position then. If it truly was you would have no drive to either axle.

Get under there with a light and camera and check the linkage. If intact and only seized soak it in WD40

this may help...

I'd guess you have some corrosion freezing the mechanism from levering front/back. Usually the left/right movement is frozen first.

Thanks for the replies. I assume something is broken given that it moves freely left /right ( as if in neutral) but still drives. The front/back does not move at all.

The video Walt posted will learn you the ropes of the CDL. More than likely your in High Unlocked otherwise you'd hear high engine revving and not move very fast and if it's locked you'll hear binding of the driveline and scrubbing of the front axle when turning on dry pavement. So..... the shifter "stick" is a two axis, six position (High/Neutral/Low - Unlocked/Locked) affair in a box with two linkages outside the box to the transfer case. The stick is where you'll have to remove the console which is completely fun and rewarding. Once you're there it's an unbolt the box and remove the linkages thing through the hump. Then by that time you should have a pretty good idea where the problem is..... if not here we are.
