Default 97 Disco won't start

My daughter's 97 Disco has been running fine, but yesterday she went out and it wouldn't start. When turning the key there is a loud whirring towards the passenger side of the engine bay, but the engine won't turn over at all. I've searched the forum and couldn't find this exact noise/problem related to a fix (I'm sure I've missed it somewhere). Any ideas what it could be? Starter solenoid? Bad starter? Lights and other electrical seem to work fine and the battery is less than a year old. Thanks in advance!

it sounds like the starter isn't engaging .just spinning.

It’s likely never going to start again. I’ll pay for shipping and take it off your hands.

Ha! That’s the advice I should probably take!

I think I’ll just buy a new starter since I like throwing money at things. 🤣

D2 starter works on a D1 and it's a little cheaper. 99 vs 150 usually.

It is the same and works perfectly in a D1. I bought mine from a bone yard for $25 and it looked brand new and worked like new.

I agree with D1Rob. I bet it's spinning and not connecting to the flexplate/flwheel. Do you own a hammer? Sometimes a quick rap or 3 will get it back on board. And if it doesn't, well you needed to replace it anyway

you dont need to pay more than $50 for a refurbished one - they are dirt cheap and falling out of the sky

HAMMER ! A tow truck guy did that exact thing when my truck would not start. I thought this guy knows what he's doing. It did not start I did need starter but had respect for him.
