Default 98 Discovery I Headlights will NOT turn on

About 2 years ago our light switch overheated and melted and therefor we could not turn on the lights. We replaced the switch and it solved the problem. Now, we have a new problem and the headlights will not turn on at all (low or High). The switch is still working but we replaced the bulbs and the fuses and its still not working. The parking lights, break lights, and blinkers work, just not the head lights. Anyone have any other suggesstions on what it might be and how easy it is to fix ourselves?

Thank you for any advice/suggesstion!

Default Headlights? what headlights?

The switch is poorly assembled, I've rebuilt mine. The problem is the springs that push on the sliding contacts... They are not strong enough and the contacts burn out. You already know how to remove the switch, now, where did I put those pictures of my rebuild... oh, HOOVER! can't find them.. It's been a while but I can guide you thru it... or better yet, do you still have the old one?
I have inserted 2 relays (one for low, one for high) to take the load off the switch, the switch was heating up when towing a trailer.
So far so good... oh yeah, except for the squirrels that chewed up the wires and now the high comes on by itself either overheating the bulbs (both high and low on) or draining the battery so I pulled the high beam fuse off until the weather gets warmer.

the pigtails to the headlights (connectors) are notorious for shorting out. Napa should have them for < $10.
