Default ABS warning light

Hi,

My son has a V8 1997 land rover Discovery 1. The ABS light illuminates at start up & then extinguishers after getting to above 7 kph, as it should. It remains off for about 1 km but then illuminates again & remains on. I believe this is intermittent but can't be sure as I have not driven the car a lot lately, my son drives it most of the time. I have read that there is an ABS relay somewhere behind the dash or a panel on the passengers side. Can someone please confirm where this relay is located & what colour the relay is? It is my understanding that I can also access a fault code connector under the drivers dash area. Again can someone confirm where I can locate this connector. If anyone has any instructions on the pin out for the connector or what the codes mean, it would be appreciated. I would think that this problem is most likely something to do with the ABS sensors but would like to know what to test before sending it for repair or buying parts.

any help appreciated

thanks Joe

Default ABS Light

Take a look at this thread. -

The blink test can be very helpful. I had a problem with the rear ABS sensor harness where it stretched and rubbed. I got a used on off of eBay for fairly cheap and fixed the problem. Others have had more serious problems.

The 97 has OBDII data system.

The OBDII connector is under the dash left of steering wheel.

Attached are pages from the electrical manual and pix of relay (K103) location.

And here is an explanation of the test in another format http://www.rswsolutions.com/index.ph...d=18&Itemid=76

Yes, it's got OBD II connection, but ordinary scanners can't read it. You need a scanner that's Land Rover specific. Testbook, Black Box, Bearmach Hawkey work.

Yes, and the jumper method works also on D1s. Not D2. The page from RSW is easier to read than the older post.

Take an open end 10mm combination wrench and lay it on top of the wheel sensor and with a small hammer tap down the four ABS wheel sensors until you hear/feel them hit bottom. That is usually the problem, they creep up away from the reluctor just enough to set off the ABS light. You may not even have to perform the blink code. The box is silver and depending on where your at it's either under the dash on the passenger or drivers side (right side). I did have the ABS ECU go catastrophic and need to be replaced. Any box with the same model number will work, not tied to the engine ECU.

Default ABS light

Hi, thanks for the replies. I was about to do the blink test when I found a friend who had a test machine that plugged into the OBD II connection. It displayed air gap problems on two sensors. I adjusted them by knocking them back against the wheel hub. We cleared the codes & it appears to have done the trick. I have driven it for a few days now & the ABS light has remained off. Thanks for your help.
