Added to the motor pool
There's been plenty of threads on Rotella, it's just oil. This is about two great trucks found that will undoubtably be restored. I'd say it's a rescue mission x2 and I'm glad they've found home.
Interesting. This is my first GEMS Rover so it all seems a bit fancy and refined after working on my Classics.
I found and addressed one oil leak today. Oil pressure switch was on hand tight, with no washer.....
still waiting on the pcv kit from AB. Now that the underside is cleaner and before I refill fluids, I think I'm going to replace all 4 oil lines and see where I'm at with regards to leaks.
what electrics aren't working on your d1? On mine someone pulled the alarm fuse and the rear hatch actuator has also been removed.

My headliner has the indentations where the sunroofs would be, and the switch blank plates, but nothing is cutout.
Darn! I guess I could worst case find an ashcroft and swap later, my 5th gear makes a bit of a whine but drives fine. Glad you're finding leaks. I'm going to try and check if the breather is blocked on the R380 and causing undue pressure, then changing the fluid. Vacuumed a bunch of dust and junk from the engine bay, adjusted the headlamps a bit. Going to trim the front bumper and rewire the rallye lamps with a better switch. The one in there worked but was so dumb, tiny button, indicator light backwards, hidden under steering wheel... Nice that it came with two floods that are CT correct... if I need them for a full build.
As for electrics that don't work, it is limited to reverse lamps (bulbs OK, fuse OK, hoping its just the pressure switch on the gearbox and not a chewed or frayed wire), rear fogs, rear wiper, rear defroster, cruise control. What I want the most is reverse lights again, and the defroster/wipers. Heater is almost as good as a D3, super warm.
Going to try and pressure wash/steam clean the engine bay, drivetrain, then stop the leaks and drive it for a while. If I can ****** another D1 this one might want a new home, I honestly can't see myself having 2 identical 1995's with the 5 speed.

I'll probably make a decision either way once I get the interior and drivetrain cleaned. Part of me misses my D3...
For now she's a hoot to drive.
So I changed the transmission fluid tonight. I had to use dextron III but my plan is to change it out in a few days. I just needed to baseline the truck and figure it couldn't hurt in the short term.
i replaced the pcv valve oil separator and buttoned everything back up. She starts but it took a few attempts, not sure what's going on there, like the starter is on the way out or not getting enough juice?
once she starts up, she idles pretty well. O2 sensors switch correctly so that saves me 100 bucks a sensor. Tomorrow I'll get her out of the shop and degrease the top of the engine (oil everywhere) then start running her around town and looking for leaks.
Now to find a seat cushion to replace the worn one on the driver side and to see if the cruise control works now that i'be replaced the perished vacuum hoses under the bonnet.

Redline MTL I'm sure you know is what you want.
Should be fine with ATF. We did 800 miles with the stuff already, it just starts to fall short when the fluid heats up, not as good when hot.

Yeah my local Napa didn't have any in stock but I wanted to refresh the fluid so I'll go on the hunt for it.
we're getting snow here and my kids got sick so I haven't had any time to wrench.

I've had a 96 r380 and currently drive a 97 380, both ZERO option trucks with the exception of a cd spinner in both. The 97 is subtly a better quality vehicle with strange little details that are different... like the door lock pulls.
