air conditioning cuts out

Probably. My 96 would run great on 3/4 but on 4/4 it would just cut off. If I would tap the fan switch, it would come back on.

It's the fan speed switch. Electrically it's a crappy design for a 60A circuit. Can be taken apart. Clean the pitted copper bar and slid contact with whatever floats your boat. Use dielectric grease. It will work for awhile. One guy here replaced his with a rotary dial with home made face plate mounted in the catch all tray above the fan switch. Worked like a champ. He found a five position rotary switch on that cheap parts tree at the auto store, you know, the one with the manual window crank handles, door panel tools, plastic fir trees and other craptastic doo dads. First three fan speeds are through resistors and the fourth position is full amps which is why it's the one that fails more often, arc pits are deeper.
