Burned Valves
Those missing chucks are the "carbon cutters" that were built into the valves and valve seats in the heads.
It is supposed to prevent carbon from preventing the valves from sticking or not closing all the way.
They were introduced in the 4.0 because they had a carbon build up problem in earlier engines.
It looks like the ones on his valves have been made bigger by the exhaust blowing by and extreme temps and rates.

Trunk Monkey, go to LRRForums.com and post up. You have zero chance of being taken care of here.
Contact the Mod Roverguy - Will Tllery and he may be able to sell you two rebuilt heads for less than it would cost to outfit one. He's on the West Coast so he's close to you for shipping.
One thing of note; don't overlook the bottom end. Once you get compression back you'll probably notice.
Good luck.

Spike may have been thinking about the carbon break valve, which is a type with a reduced neck. From his previous referenced post:
NOTE: Exhaust valves should only be replaced with new
items if the existing exhaust valves are not of the “carbonbreak”
type or the valve is damaged. Carbon-break valves
are easily identified by the reduced diameter section on the
valve stem just above the valve head (Figure 1).

I'm from the camp of get another set of heads, and look at main bearings, which can be replaced in the truck. But it depends on how long you want to keep the truck and spare cash unknown to SWMBO. Once you get started, there's oil pump, water pump, timing chain, cam, lifters, bearings, rear main seal, rings, pinning liners, even freeze plugs, and the list goes on. A fella's gotta have some time to actually drive the truck in a somewhat reckless and responsible manner.

No, your right the heads-up on heads is the same. Roverguy is in Va. Roverdude is in Cali.....tired and overworked is my excuse. Might be a little more on the shipping but the heads are top notch.
Hey, local neighbor, you have a problem you need those head total gone thru by a shop, have you checked the cylinder walls for bad scratches?
I have a local friend that has a rebuilt set of SAI heads from a 4.6 , that can be bought right.
As for the rest of the engine, at your mileage and with that abuse, you awill need a new timing chain, oil pump repair kit cam and lifter along with a complete bearing inspection.
II would finish the engine off with a complete flush.
Send me your number if you are interested in the heads, also look in the sticky at the top of this section and seriously consider doing the entire service.
