I paid $7000 for my D1 six years ago. At the time it had 58K on it and no known issues. Three years later the head gaskets needed to be replaced. I had a shop do it, which included machine shop resurfacing of the heads; that was about $1500.

I also needed new shocks, and various "little" things that do add up, but are still much less than a new car payment when averaged over 6 years.

So the 99 Disco I, i have looked at it and its in really nice condition! However we are making the assumption the engine doesn't run, i didn't get the chance to tinker with it because its blizzarding out. But i have been told it rolls over (slowly) and doesn't actually fire.

Just a reminder it overheated because of blown head gasket.

Assuming I buy it for $800 (is it worth that with 145000 miles), and buy an engine for $1000 and manage to get it put in by somebody for ... well idk yet. Is it all worth it? I love everything about it, its so unique.

If you could get it and another known good engine for under $1500 total, then I'd do it. But any higher than that, and everything else better be perfect, literally. I got mine for 1k with only a high idle problem and under 90k miles. Everything works on it and the body is great except for the front bumper is nasty looking.. If I had known more about the high idle part, I probably would have only paid $800 tops. If you buy it for $800 and can do the gaskets yourself and the 60k maintenance, you're gonna be around $1300-1500. If it needs an engine, you might get lucky and find a used one for $200, but probably gonna pay alot more than that and the inconvenience of working outside is a HUGE factor.

I am going to have to pay someone else to do it as i don't have proper facilities or equipment for an engine swap.

I am trying to find someone i know and trust to do it for a lower cost. I might offer less based on that, and he hasn't had anyone else show real interest.

I really like it, and I have always wanted one. I suppose for now it depends on engine cost and the labor cost. I think $1500 is a good cap for the whole project.

If it were me, I'd offer no more than $400. Or look elsewhere for another. One will show up.

Any ideas on where to find an engine, due to my location there are none locally. I looked on ebay the cheapest decent one i could find was $1000 which i thought was too much.

I found someone to do the engine swap for me though. I still haven't bought, i won't go over $500 for it though.
