Yea, I totally forgot to ask what year D1 it is? If it is pre-'96, you would be ok(other than legal issues), if it is '96 or later(OBD-2), you have 4-O2 sensors which reads pre- and post cat exhaust levels. Removing a cat in that case would pop you're check engine light constantly, and MIGHT affect fuel/drivibility

only the front o2 sensors will affect performance and MPG. (and like was said earlier, the 94 and 95 only have front sensors). Removing that cat, especially if it is bad, would actually improve MPG, not reduce. On a 96 and newer, it will cause the light to come on which is annoying. I had the cat replaced on my 96, because I like to know when a NEW problem starts.

I have a related question. I've got a 96 Discovery, but so far everything that I have looked at makes this vehicle look like a 95. It was made in early 96, february or march if I recall.
Is there any distinguishable differences between the 95 and 96 to tell if mine is more like a 95 than a 96?
I ask because I too was thinking of removing my cats.

Exactly. A 94-95 will have 3.9L on the intake, and will have a distributor. The 96+ will have 4.0L on the intake and coil packs.
All of the 96+ have driver and passenger airbags.
Most importantly the 10th digit of the VIN of a 1995 will be S and a 1996 will be T (this is for ALL US market cars)
