Cherry Bombed The Rover..........Drone?
The only way I know to get rid of a drone is to add a resonator (another mini, pre-muffler) or get something else. I was thinking of a Flowmaster. They offer a couple versions. Unfortunately you don't know what it will sound like or drone like until someone tries it. Flowmasters are relatively inexpensive - under $100.
I have a similar problem. Had to repair the exhaust system on my 97 disco. So I went for the magna flow system from AB. Have that same drone it seems. Hate it. Liked my old sound but the stainless steel sold me on it. Tried to talk to AB for a return or a solution. They told me that's the way it sounds and it's mine. Any thoughts?
actually it has to do with acoustics and resonant frequencies, think of it like this your exhaust/engine are a tuning fork and your boxy rover is a beautiful grand piano, you may not quite understand the difference but if you were inside a piano and you poked a hole in the side the resonant frequencies of the enclosure would change, the sound will be different on the inside than it will on the outside. kind of like stock exhaust vibrations they are pretty loud on the inside but aren't even noticeable on the outside. my suggestion is put the dynamat between the tuning fork and the piano!

Rather than Dynamat, as was suggested, a layer of mass-loaded vinyl with a layer of closed-cell foam under your carpet will pretty much silence it. Maybe a little bit of Dynamat or similar would help, but that is more for silencing panel vibrations than blocking airborne noise, which is what you are dealing with. It's expensive, but you can keep your same exhaust if you want.
I've had good luck with Cherry Bomb Turbo II mufflers, they're usually $20 or less at Auto Zone. I've never run into a resonance issue on the vehicles I've done. They are not as loud as glass packs, though.
