a little update first! vdo gauge installed and engine runs at perfect temps. fuel gauge fixed by just unplugging and plugging back in. found the plug on the back of the trans and the speedo works.
made it over 500 miles on a full tank to the light on!
i couldn't get it to crank at first either and couldn't figure out why. i ended up using a new wire from the ignition straight to the starter.

I found the issue. There is a round plug on the auto trans that has 4 wires. Two are the reverse lights, one is a temp light signal, other is a switch that only allows it to start in park. This wire must be grounded in order for the starter solenoid wire to energize.
